Take the 3-minute test that can help you dementia-proof your diet and lifestyle

As part of global Alzheimer’s Prevention Day, May 15th, a group of world-leading experts on Alzheimer’s prevention have created a free on-line 3-minute Alzheimer’s Prevention Check that helps you see, at a glance, what simple diet and lifestyle changes most help to dementia-proof your diet and lifestyle.

“Alzheimer’s may be entirely preventable in those 99% who do not have the rare causative genes and act early to optimise all diet and lifestyle factors.” Says Patrick Holford, founder of the charity that is hosting the free online test. Dr Tommy Wood, assistant professor of neuroscience at the University of Washington, agrees. “Several studies suggest that the majority of dementia may be preventable, including significant potential benefits from optimising diet and lifestyle in middle age.”

“By virtue of the simple lifestyle choices we make on a daily basis, we are the architects of our brain’s destiny.” Says neurologist and New York Times best-selling author Dr David Perlmutter, another member of the group. “Only 1% of Alzheimer’s is caused by genes.”

The 29 questions in the Alzheimer’s Prevention Check are key questions from a larger Dementia Risk Index and Cognitive Function Test offered by foodforthebrain.org which has been taken by over 430,000 people in the past ten years. “We want to encourage people to act now to improve their diet and lifestyle to prevent problems later in life. Everyone taking this test helps us to learn how to drive down future risk.” says Holford.

“Keep desserts for dessert.” says Professor Robert Lustig from the University of California, who points out that eating sugary snacks, drinks and breakfast bars throughout the day can literally shrink the brain. Teenagers with sugar problems already show the same kind of brain shrinkage and memory loss seen in older people with pre-dementia. The youngest age of a non-genetic diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is a 19-year old Chinese teenager. “Excess alcohol is another major promoter of cognitive decline.” Says Dr Chris Palmer, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
