Wacth Dr. Gorham’s presentation on vitamin D & disease prevention
ABOUT DR. GORHAM
Dr. Edward D. Gorham is one of the scientists on the GrassrootsHealth Nutrient Research Institute panel. He serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, and is also a member of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center.
He earned his PhD in Epidemiology from UC San Diego in 1997. Dr. Gorham was a co-recipient of the 1998 Arnold-Rikli Prize, awarded in Basel, Switzerland, for his pioneering work on vitamin D and cancer prevention, an international award presented biennially to scientists for outstanding contributions to photobiology and photomedicine.
His more recent work focuses on the design and development of large-scale prospective epidemiological studies examining the benefits of vitamin D in cancer prevention and treatment, as well as investigating the potential risks of chemical sunscreen use in exacerbating vitamin D deficiency and possibly increasing skin cancer risk.
KEY CONTRIBUTIONS AND STUDIES
- Vitamin D and Cancer Prevention:
Co-author of several foundational and highly cited studies on vitamin D and cancer, including research on colorectal cancer prevention (2007) and pooled/meta-analytic studies examining vitamin D status and cancer outcomes. - Epidemiological Evidence:
Contributor to meta-analyses and systematic reviews exploring associations between serum 25(OH)D levels, all-cause mortality, breast cancer survival, and other chronic disease endpoints. - UVB–Vitamin D–Cancer Hypothesis:
Collaborated with Dr. Cedric F. Garland and other UCSD researchers on ecological and cohort studies linking UVB exposure, vitamin D status, and cancer incidence/mortality, helping establish the UVB–vitamin D–cancer hypothesis that underpins much of today’s vitamin D research.
